Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by the gradual loss of lean tissue muscle mass. It is a common condition in older adults, affecting 10-50% of individuals over age 65. Left untreated, sarcopenia can result in loss of strength and function, leading to:

  • Weakness.

  • Fatigue.

  • Balance problems.

  • Falls/injuries.

  • Sagging posture.

  • Inflammation.

  • Difficulty with daily activities- climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, etc.

  • Reduced mobility and decreased quality of life.

Causes:

  • Accelerated lean mass loss secondary to GLP-1s- Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Rybelsus, Zepbound, Trulicity, etc.

  • Age-related decline in anabolic hormones- testosterone, growth hormone, etc.

  • Insufficient resistance strength training and reduced physical activity.

  • Insufficient dietary protein or other nutritional deficiencies.

  • Chronic diseases- diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Lean muscle and bone loss can be avoided if detected early and necessary adjustments to your GLP-1 or other medications and therapy are started by your health care provider.
