BREAST ULTRASOUND

A breast ultrasound is an examination that uses sound waves to produce images of breast tissue. The benefits of ultrasound include:

  • Non-invasive and no compression.

  • Can breathe normally while lying on the back.

  • No ionizing radiation exposure.

  • Can differentiate cysts from tumors.

  • Can guide minimally invasive procedures.

SCREENING BREAST ULTRASOUND

40% of women have dense breast tissue. For these women, standard of care 3D mammographic screening alone may not be enough to detect breast cancer. Cancer may have a similar white appearance to dense breast tissue on mammography, masking its appearance.

To help improve early detection, a supplementary screening exam, such as a whole breast screening ultrasound, may be a recommended adjunctive exam for dense breasts.

DIAGNOSTIC BREAST ULTRASOUND

With a dedicated breast imaging radiologist reading studies daily, if something abnormal requires a closer look, a targeted breast ultrasound may be performed for worrisome areas, oftentimes added on while you are in the office.
