Bone Density Evaluation
Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease worldwide, affecting one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50. Bone weakening may be due to aging or caused by other factors that combine with age. Symptoms of osteoporosis do not occur until a lot of bone strength is lost. Visible symptoms may include loss of height, along with curvature of the upper back. Osteoporosis can also result in a crippling and painful fracture, occurring most often in the hip, back, or wrist. We encourage you to let your primary healthcare provider know any history of broken bones or fractures. It is also a good idea to have regular conversations about diet, exercise, and medication usage.
Our screening for the early detection and treatment of osteoporosis is performed through a state-of-the-art DXA system, which involves low-dose X-rays and produces superb images. During the exam, you will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table, remaining in your normal clothing in most cases. Belt buckles, metal or thick plastic buttons, and metal jewelry are removed from the exam region. Our technologist will position your arms and legs for the test while you lie still and breathe normally. The bone density test is painless and takes only a few minutes to perform.
